Foundations of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Practice

A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer must practice professionalism in all interactions with patients and other healthcare professionals. Students will learn with, from, and about one another to improve patient care as a part of an interprofessional team. Role clarification and negotiation, team communications, and relationship-focused care will be explored, along with team differences processing, collaborative leadership, team functioning, and patient communication from an interprofessional perspective. Students will use these skills to collaboratively practice within a diverse interprofessional team.
To advance the process of reconciliation and address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, students will examine the history, impact, and legacy of colonialism on Indigenous health in Canada and develop intercultural competence to provide culturally competent care and services. This course will allow students to reflect on their own values, beliefs and attitudes toward patient care while providing the fundamentals of interpersonal communication used in healthcare including emotional awareness, empathy, health literacy, and patient education

Sonographic Physics and Instrumentation I

Human Anatomy & Pathophysiology for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers

This course will familiarize students with the basics of pathophysiology and human anatomy. With a keen emphasis on practical application, participants will delve into the anatomical structures commonly interrogated with ultrasound. Abdominal Sonography I

Recognition of normal anatomic structures is essential to competent ultrasound scanning. In this course students will learn normal cross-sectional anatomy of the abdominal organs and their relational anatomy within the human body. The theory taught in this course will closely align to the clinical skills taught in DIMG1050 to reinforce student learning and aid in the development of the necessary skills to image the abdominal organs.

An in-depth review of inter-professional behaviour and patient care, ethics and confidentiality skills required to work directly with patients as part of a healthcare team member.
